"The wonderful vitality and remarkable quality
of the Romanian people
give guarantees that
that nation will creditably
fulfill its historic and
international mission;
the mission of guarding
the Latin culture and civilization
in Eastern Europe."

The Washington Post", April 13, 1999

The tradition of folk culture has roots in the Thracian-Illyrian-Dacian culture and has diversified in the curse of the centuries by coming into contact with the Greco-Roman and Byzantine art and civilizations.

Elements of folk culture persist in the modern period.

Architecture-the art of stone and woodcarving.

Pottery has its origin in the ceramics of the old cultures, to which Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Oriental elements were added.

Painting on wood and glass exclusively introduces religious themes.

Folk music (vocal, instrumental, or vocal and instrumental) is well represented by the"doina", the threnode, lullaby, wedding song, Christmas carols, and ballads.

Decorative fabrics in which a special place is held by the well-known " tree of life" motif (in Moldavia and Maramures), as well as floral and zoomorphic motifs (in Oltenia and Wallachia)/
Folk Costumes impress by their poise, ornaments, coloring, composition and fabric.

Folk Dance, rhythmical and alert, has two branches:

Ritual dancing (" Calusarii")
Entertaining dancing (" Hora", "Sarba").

Great Romanian creative minds have drawn inspiration from these traditions, and adapted them to significantly enrich the culture of their own country, and of the world. The result was a synthesis of these deepest held traditions and the substance of modern European culture.
